The war memorial is set in the churchyard of St. John the Evangelist, on the corner of Old Church Lane and Rectory Lane. Made of grey Cornish Granite it takes the form of a three-step base and topped by a large Celtic cross with a knot design set on tapering footed stem.
Rectangular bronze panels are fixed to each side of base and list the names of the 58 parishioners of Stanmore who did not return from action in the Great War.
History
The war memorial of Great Stanmore that we know today, started life as an oak triptych, a simple shrine bearing the message, Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Erected during the war on 10 March 1918, it was dedicated by Bishop Suffragan of Willesden. The list of Stanmore’s servicemen who didn’t return home, were written on the wooden leaves either side of the main body.
It was decided that a fitting tribute should be made more permanent and two years after the end of World War One, a memorial was unveiled on the corner of Old Church Lane and Colliers Lane, known today as Rectory Lane. It was to serve as a physical reminder of the selfless sacrifice of those who fought and died for their country.
The monument was built at a cost of some £700 and it was unveiled by Brigadier-General J.H A. Anderson on 22nd July 1920, and as part of the occasion soldiers performed a 30-gun salute. The service was dedicated by the local Rector, Rev. Stewart F L Bernays.
The front panel reads:
1914-1918 REMEMBER WITH THANKSGIVING THE TRUE AND FAITHFUL MEN WHO IN THESE YEARS OF WAR WENT FORTH FROM THIS PLACE FOR GOD AND THE RIGHT. THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO RETURNED NOT AGAIN ARE HERE INSCRIBED TO BE HONOURED FOR EVERMORE
The other two panels list the 58 men who did not return
